Yeah, actually, I was looking for something very specific to run my Advertising. It would be part of a larger Idea I’ve been working on called ‘Micro-Advertising’ and it would allow people to advertise with 100% accuracy to only the people in the Region (using IP three-digit metro codes) they wish to advertise in. The idea requires a few steps and few different Joomla! Components, so bear with me…
The Advertising Component itself that would allow the user (in the frontend) to upload and edit their own banners with a pre-set limit on how many banners they could have, as well as how often they could change and edit their banners. You could do this with different groups, or even a micro-integration with Account Expiration Control (AEC).
Using AEC, you would create different subscription groups with the ability to assign the number of banners a user gets along with how often they can update or edit their banner (monthly, weekly, unlimited) based on how much money they‘ve paid you. They would interact with the banner component by inputting their banner and which pre-created Zone they want their banner to appear under in the front-end.
A module would have already been created for and pointing at each Zone already in the backend.
Using Community Builder, set up a field to collect which Region a person does most of their shopping in when they Register, which will correspond with the different (and pre-created) Zones, and their related advertising modules. This information will be stored on their profile and retrieved by us later on.
Still with me?
You would then use the MetaMod in your regular ‘Banner’ Spot on your template to direct which banner module (hence, which region/section/etc.) gets shown to whom. The cool thing about the MetaMod (that I enjoy at least) is that you can use it to retrieve IP addresses of the user viewing a particular page and with a 75% accuracy (if they are not logged in and based solely on their IP), it will assign which module to show based on that. BUT, you can also --and at the same time (once they‘re logged in)-- have it (MetaMod) go into Community Builder to retrieve the Information that your Users inputted when they Registered, and line up the User with their corresponding Module-Zone (and it’s banners that your advertisers already inputted).
So now when they are logged in, there is 100% accuracy of your advertisers banner being shown to the person in the Region they want to advertise in as well as the incentive to people at the local “Brick and Mortar” level --that may be wasting all of their advertising money on print or Television advertising still-- to advertise to the people looking for their very specific ‘niche‘ thing, and living in their specific region. I’m not sure if it would work on a broad social network, but for Niche community or information sites, I think this would be golden.
I am going to use this exact formula--almost--to construct something here in the United States using the 211 different regions and advertising to those regions on three different parts of my site, for a total of 633 zones, modules, and different parts that someone…ANYONE can advertise to on a local level for the specific, niche thing they’re selling/promoting/offering.
Right now, the system is a bit more manual than what I’ve described, where I’m having to retrieve the uploaded banner (after getting an email that it’s been submitted) and place it in the corresponding Zone myself. It’s going to be quite time consuming when/if I’m running at full capacity, so having a Component that can interact with each individual user, handle their banner uploads/updates, and allow them to assign that banner to the region/Zone they want,--that I have already created--would be a life-saver.
If you’ve made it this far, I apologize for this being so long, but I didn’t know where else to post an Idea like this and I felt it important to lay it all out, and hopefully someone, somewhere can use this idea to monetize their own site. And if you think about it, paying $5/month to advertise is really cheap, but when you have even just 6 people per region (or city) with even just 50 different regions you‘re advertising in, that’s $1500/month…
