I'm getting a message from Joomla 1.5.8 that this component isn't 1.5 native and that I'd have to turn on the legacy plugin. Is this true? If so, any idea when this plugin might be 1.5 native?

This extension is a Native extension. Are you having problem installing other extensions or just this one?
